Support That Moves With You
Kinesio Taping
You've probably seen athletes wearing colourful strips of tape on their shoulders, knees, or backs. That's kinesiology tape, and it isn't just for professional athletes. At Port Credit Physio & Rehab, our physiotherapists use Kinesio Taping® as part of your treatment plan to support injured muscles and joints, ease pain, and help you stay active while you recover. Kinesio taping is a therapeutic taping technique using a thin, stretchy, cotton-based tape applied directly to the skin. Unlike rigid athletic tape or bulky braces that restrict movement, kinesiology tape stretches with your body, giving support while still letting you move freely. Your physiotherapist chooses where and how to apply the tape, and how much stretch to use, based on your injury and what you need it to do.
How Kinesiology Tape Works
When applied with the right technique, kinesiology tape gently lifts and supports the skin and underlying tissues. It is thought to:
Support muscles and joints without limiting your range of motion
Reduce pain by changing the sensory signals sent from the skin to the brain
Help manage swelling by encouraging fluid movement under the skin
Improve body awareness, giving gentle feedback that helps you move and hold posture correctly
Offload overworked tissues so irritated muscles and tendons can settle
Benefits of Kinesio Taping
Support without restricting movement
Stay active while an injury heals.
Water-resistant
Shower and swim with it on.
Lasts several days per application
Fewer reapplications than traditional tape.
Drug-free and non-invasive
Complements your other physiotherapy treatment.
Kinesiology Tape vs. Athletic Tape and Braces
| Kinesiology Tape | Rigid Athletic Tape | Braces | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Movement | Allows full movement | Restricts movement | Often restricts movement |
| Wear time | Several days | Hours (one activity) | Removed daily |
| Water-resistant | Yes | No | Varies |
| Feel | Lightweight, flexible | Stiff | Bulky |
Conditions Kinesio Taping Can Help With
Taping is used alongside other treatments for a range of conditions, including:
Foot and Lower Leg
Plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendon pain, shin splints, and ankle sprains.
Knee Pain
Including runner's knee, patellar tendinitis ("jumper's knee"), and knee instability.
Shoulder Pain
Rotator cuff irritation, impingement, and postural shoulder pain.

Back and Neck Pain

Swelling and Bruising
Taping techniques that may help manage swelling after injury or surgery.
What to Expect
Application: your physiotherapist cleans and dries the skin and applies the tape in a specific pattern — it takes just a few minutes and is painless
Wearing the tape: kinesiology tape typically stays on for 2–3 days through showers, workouts, and daily activities; after showering, pat it dry rather than rubbing it
Removing the tape: peel slowly and gently, ideally in the direction of hair growth — applying baby oil or lotion first can make removal easier
Remove it early if you notice itching, redness, a rash, or increased pain, and let your physiotherapist know
Who Shouldn't Use Kinesio Tape?
Taping may not be suitable if you have:
- An allergy or sensitivity to adhesives
- Open wounds, broken skin, or fragile skin in the area
- An active skin infection
- A known or suspected blood clot (DVT)
- Reduced skin sensation, such as from diabetes

Kinesio Taping FAQs
How long can you wear Kinesio tape?
Usually 2–3 days. The tape stays on through showers and daily activity until the adhesive starts to loosen.
Can I shower or swim with kinesiology tape?
Yes. The tape is water-resistant. Pat it dry afterwards, and don't rub it with a towel.
Does Kinesio taping hurt?
No. Application is painless, and most people barely notice the tape once it's on. Removal may pull slightly on skin or hair, so peel it slowly.
Is Kinesio taping covered by insurance?
When it's applied as part of a physiotherapy session, it's typically covered under your physiotherapy benefits.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can book directly with Port Credit Physio & Rehab.
