In-Clinic & In-Home Care, Before and After Your Surgery
Pre- and Post-Surgical Physiotherapy
Pre- and post-surgical physiotherapy prepares your body before an operation and guides your recovery afterward. At Port Credit Physio & Rehab, our registered physiotherapists build one-on-one plans that follow your surgeon's protocol, in our Port Credit clinic or in your own home. The goal is simple: less stiffness, safer movement, and a faster return to independence. Facing surgery can feel overwhelming. Between hospital appointments, pain management, and wondering when you'll walk comfortably again, it's easy to focus only on the day of the procedure. Rehabilitation shouldn't start and stop at the hospital doors. For patients with acute pain, weight-bearing restrictions, or mobility challenges right after discharge, we also offer in-home physiotherapy across Port Credit and nearby Mississauga neighbourhoods. See our post-surgical rehab condition page for a breakdown of recovery timelines by surgery type, from knee and hip replacement to ACL reconstruction and spine surgery.

Why Prepare Before Surgery? The Value of Prehab
Many people assume physiotherapy starts only after the incision closes. Prehabilitation ("prehab") in the weeks before surgery can make the early recovery period noticeably smoother.
Builds strength before you lose it
Stronger quadriceps, glutes, or rotator cuff muscles before surgery give you more reserve when those muscles weaken during early recovery.
Preserves mobility
Improving range of motion before an operation often makes motion easier to regain afterward.
Rehearses daily movement
We teach stairs, chair transfers, and safe use of walkers, crutches, or canes before you're dealing with post-surgical pain and medication.
Builds general conditioning
Better fitness helps you handle the physical demands of surgery and early rehab.
Post-Surgical Recovery: Regaining Strength Step by Step
Healing tissue can't be rushed, but keeping it still for too long leads to joint stiffness and compensation strain elsewhere. Your program moves through clear phases, always within your surgeon's guidelines:
Early Protection & Swelling Control
Gentle range of motion, ice and swelling management education, and hands-on manual therapy that respects your incision.
Restoring Joint Movement
Active-assisted mobility work to safely regain full extension and bending.
Progressive Strengthening
Exercises that re-activate weakened muscles and correct limping or uneven walking.
Return to Real Life
Training for condo stairwells, commuting across the GTA, or getting back to running along the Waterfront Trail.

We build surgeon-aligned plans for:
Joint replacements (knee, hip, and shoulder)
ACL and meniscus surgery
Rotator cuff and labral repairs
Spine surgery

Supporting Care During Recovery
Once early healing is underway, some patients benefit from added support. Depending on your surgeon's protocol and how your body responds, your physiotherapist may coordinate care with Registered Massage Therapy (RMT) to ease muscle tension in the neck, hips, or lower back caused by limping or compensating.

Pre- and Post-Surgical Physiotherapy FAQs
When should I start physiotherapy after surgery?
Your start date depends on your procedure and your surgeon's protocol. After many knee and hip replacements, gentle mobility and circulation exercises begin within 24 to 72 hours of hospital discharge. Soft tissue repairs, such as rotator cuff or ACL reconstruction, may need a period of protection first. We follow your surgeon's guidelines so you start at the safest time.
How does in-home post-surgical physiotherapy work?
Your registered physiotherapist brings assessment tools and rehab equipment to your home. We check your surgical site, guide safe bed and chair transfers, practise stairs, and provide gentle range-of-motion and hands-on care. Once your mobility and endurance improve, you can continue your care at our clinic.
Is in-home physiotherapy covered by private insurance?
Most extended health plans, including many from Sun Life, Manulife, Canada Life, and Green Shield, cover in-home physiotherapy under standard physiotherapy benefits. Coverage limits and requirements vary by plan, so check your policy or ask us. We offer direct billing to most major insurers.
Why should I do prehab before surgery?
Surgery is physically demanding. Going in with stronger muscles, better endurance, and good joint mobility is associated with better early function and, for some patients, shorter hospital stays. Prehab also teaches you the exercises and mobility aids you'll use after surgery, so early recovery feels less stressful.
Do I need a doctor's referral for pre- or post-surgical physiotherapy?
No. Physiotherapists are primary healthcare providers in Ontario, so you can book directly. Some insurance plans require a physician's note for reimbursement. Please bring your discharge paperwork and surgical protocol so we can align your care with your surgeon.
