Recover From a Car Accident, Without the Paperwork Stress

Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Physiotherapy

A car accident can leave you shaken, sore, and unsure of what to do next. Even a minor collision can cause injuries like whiplash, back pain, or headaches that show up hours or days later. At Port Credit Physio & Rehab, we help you recover from motor vehicle accident injuries while guiding you through the insurance process, so you can focus on getting better. We bill your auto insurance company directly, and our team handles the treatment paperwork for you. Don't wait for pain to get worse. Some injuries, especially whiplash, may not be fully noticeable until days after the accident.

Car Accident Injuries We Treat

Whiplash

Neck pain, stiffness, and headaches caused by the rapid back-and-forth motion of the head during a collision. Whiplash is the most common car accident injury, and early treatment can help prevent long-term problems. See our neck pain condition page.

Back Pain

Strains, sprains, and disc-related pain in the lower or mid back, including sciatica. See our lower back pain & sciatica condition page.

Shoulder Injuries

Pain from seatbelt impact, bracing against the steering wheel, or rotator cuff strain. See our shoulder pain condition page.

Headaches

Including cervicogenic headaches, which start in the neck.

Concussion and Dizziness

Dizziness, balance problems, and visual symptoms after a head injury, treated through our Vestibular Rehabilitation service.

Soft-Tissue Injuries

Sprains, strains, and bruising to muscles and ligaments throughout the body.

Knee and Wrist Injuries

From impact with the dashboard or bracing during the collision. See our knee pain and hand & wrist pain condition pages.

Our MVA Recovery Process

1

Initial Assessment

A registered physiotherapist assesses your injuries, how the accident affects your daily activities and work, and your recovery goals. We then design a personalized treatment plan.

2

Insurance Paperwork

We prepare and submit the required treatment forms to your auto insurer, so you don't have to navigate the paperwork alone.

3

Evidence-Based Treatment

We use evidence-based techniques, including the McKenzie Method®, manual therapy, and progressive exercise, to reduce pain and restore movement.

4

Return to Daily Life

We work toward getting you back to work, driving, sport, and everyday activities, with regular progress updates to your insurer.

What to Do After a Car Accident

1

Get medical attention

If you're hurt, call 911 for serious injuries.

2

Report the accident

Report to the police if required, and notify your auto insurer as soon as possible.

3

Request accident benefits

Complete an accident benefits application from your insurer promptly, since deadlines apply.

4

Book a physiotherapy assessment

You don't need a doctor's referral.

5

Let us handle the paperwork

We'll manage the treatment paperwork with your insurer.

Who Is Covered?

In Ontario, accident benefits are available regardless of who caused the accident. You may be eligible for physiotherapy coverage if you were:

A driver or passenger in a vehicle

A pedestrian struck by a vehicle

A cyclist involved in a collision with a vehicle

Even if you don't own a car, you may still be able to claim through a family member's policy or the insurer of the vehicle involved.

Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Physiotherapy FAQs

Do I need a doctor's referral for car accident physiotherapy?

No. In Ontario, you can see a registered physiotherapist directly after a motor vehicle accident.

Will I have to pay for physiotherapy after a car accident?

For approved treatment, we bill your auto insurer directly, so in most cases you won't pay out of pocket. Our team will review your coverage with you before treatment begins.

What if the accident wasn't my fault?

Ontario's accident benefits are no-fault, which means you can access treatment coverage regardless of who caused the accident.

What if I didn't feel hurt right away?

That's common. Whiplash and other soft-tissue injuries often appear hours or days after an accident. You can still seek treatment, but notify your insurer and book an assessment as soon as possible.

How long after an accident should I start physiotherapy?

As soon as possible. Early treatment can reduce pain, prevent stiffness, and support a faster recovery.

What if I was a pedestrian or cyclist?

You may still be eligible for accident benefits, even if you don't own a car. Contact us and we'll help you understand your options.
