Strong, Stable, and Ready to Move Again

Knee Pain

Knee pain can stop you in your tracks. It can make stairs, squatting, walking, and running uncomfortable or even impossible. Whether it started with a sudden twist on the soccer field, built up gradually from running, or comes from arthritis or recent surgery, the right rehabilitation plan makes a significant difference. At Port Credit Physio & Rehab, we combine hands-on care, progressive strengthening, and functional training to get your knee strong, stable, and ready for the activities you enjoy.

Common Knee Conditions We Treat

Knee Osteoarthritis

Gradual changes in the cartilage that cause stiffness, swelling, grinding, and pain with walking, stairs, and getting up from a chair.

Meniscus Tears

Injury to the knee's shock-absorbing cartilage, either from a sudden twist or gradual wear. Symptoms include pain along the joint line, swelling, catching, or locking.

ACL Injuries & Reconstruction Rehab

Tears of the anterior cruciate ligament, usually from pivoting, landing, or sudden stops, causing swelling and a feeling of the knee "giving way."

MCL & Other Ligament Sprains

Stretching or tearing of the ligaments that stabilize the knee, often from a blow to the side of the knee or a twisting injury.

Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (Runner's Knee)

Pain around or behind the kneecap that worsens with stairs, squatting, running, or sitting for long periods.

Patellar & Quadriceps Tendinopathy (Jumper's Knee)

Overload of the tendons at the front of the knee, common in running, jumping, and court sports.

IT Band Syndrome

Sharp pain on the outside of the knee, typically in runners and cyclists, often appearing at the same point in each run.

Bursitis & Baker's Cyst

Swelling in or around the knee from kneeling, overuse, or underlying joint irritation. A Baker's cyst causes fullness or tightness behind the knee.

Total & Partial Knee Replacement (Pre- & Post-Surgery)

Structured rehab to restore knee bending, straightening, strength, and walking after surgery. See our pre- and post-surgical physiotherapy page.

Fractures & Post-Surgical Rehab

Recovery after kneecap or tibial fractures, meniscus repairs, and other knee surgeries.

Growth-Related Knee Pain in Youth Athletes

Conditions such as Osgood-Schlatter disease, which cause pain below the kneecap in active, growing children.

Signs You Should Seek Physiotherapy

Pain around, behind, or at the front of the kneecap

Swelling that appears after activity or doesn't go away

Clicking, grinding, catching, or locking of the knee

A feeling that your knee is unstable or "gives way"

Difficulty with stairs, squatting, kneeling, or getting up from a chair

Stiffness or inability to fully bend or straighten the knee

Pain that stops you from running, playing sport, or walking longer distances

How Our Physiotherapy Care Helps

Research consistently supports exercise-based physiotherapy as a first-line treatment for most knee conditions. For degenerative meniscus tears in middle-aged adults, structured exercise therapy has shown outcomes comparable to arthroscopic surgery. For knee osteoarthritis, exercise is recommended in every major clinical guideline.

Thorough Knee & Movement Assessment

We assess the knee, hip, ankle, and foot together, since problems above and below the knee often contribute to knee pain.

Manual Therapy

Joint mobilizations and soft tissue work to reduce pain, manage swelling, and restore range of motion.

Progressive Strengthening

Targeted quadriceps, hamstring, glute, and calf strengthening. For tendinopathy, we use evidence-based loading programs that progress from isometric holds to heavy, slow strength work.

Shockwave Therapy

An evidence-supported option for stubborn patellar tendinopathy and other chronic tendon pain. See our shockwave therapy page.

Acupuncture & Dry Needling

To reduce pain and ease tight, sensitive muscles in the thigh, calf, and hip. See our acupuncture & dry needling page.

Swelling Management & Education

Clear guidance on activity levels, pacing, and self-care to settle flare-ups.

Pre- & Post-Surgical Rehabilitation

Structured, milestone-based programs for ACL reconstruction, meniscus repair, and knee replacement, aligned with your surgeon's protocol.

Functional, Sports & Return-to-Run Training

Our clinic is equipped to take you beyond pain relief and back to full performance:

Treadmill Running Assessment

We analyze your running mechanics, cadence, and loading patterns to identify what's driving your knee pain, and build a graded return-to-run plan.

Stair Training

Rebuilding strength, control, and confidence on stairs, which is essential after surgery and for arthritis management.

Agility & Plyometric Training

Cutting, hopping, landing, and change-of-direction drills to prepare you for a safe return to sport.

Strength & Conditioning Workouts

Progressive, gym-based programs to build long-term knee resilience.

Return-to-Sport Testing

Strength and hop testing to guide safe return decisions. After ACL reconstruction, research shows returning to sport after at least nine months, and only once strength targets are met, significantly lowers the risk of re-injury.

When to Seek Urgent Medical Care

  • You develop calf pain and swelling after knee surgery

Common Questions About Knee Pain Treatment

When should I see a physiotherapist for knee pain?

If knee pain lasts more than a week or two, keeps returning, causes swelling, or limits your walking, stairs, or sport, a physiotherapy assessment is a good next step. See someone sooner after a twisting injury with swelling or instability.

Is it better to walk or rest with knee pain?

For most knee conditions, including arthritis, staying active is better than resting. Walking within a comfortable level helps keep the joint healthy.

How do I know if I tore my ACL or meniscus?

An ACL tear often involves a pop, rapid swelling, and a feeling of instability. Meniscus tears tend to cause pain along the joint line, catching, or locking. A physiotherapist can perform clinical tests to help identify the injury.

Can a torn meniscus heal on its own?

Tears in the outer part of the meniscus have a good blood supply and can heal. Tears in the inner part heal less reliably, but many people still recover full function with physiotherapy and strengthening, without surgery.

Can physiotherapy help knee arthritis?

Yes. Exercise therapy is one of the most effective treatments for knee osteoarthritis. It can reduce pain, improve function, and help delay or avoid the need for surgery.

How long does rehab take after a knee replacement?

Most people see major improvements within the first three months, with continued gains in strength and function for up to a year. Consistent physiotherapy is key to regaining full bending and walking ability.
